The cup is fixed rigidly to a vertical tubular strut (spyglass), which has its upper end anchored to the chassis or a reinforced wing. On the front wheels, the entire strut rotates to allow direction. Rotating arms extend in and out of the chassis, in order to keep the wheel in vertical position and to resist acceleration and braking force. A tow arm is attached to the cup at one end and extends forward to a pivot in the chassis. The arm can be extended in a V-shape with two pivots, either side by side or with the internal pivot slightly behind the front (a semi-trailer arm). The towing arms are usually found only in the rear.

Stabilizing Bars

The pivots allow the bar to be twisted in order to control the stability, although in a limited way. To prevent the cars from swinging (bending at the corners) a stabilizer bar is used, often in the front, sometimes in the rear and at other times both in the front and in the rear. It is a torsion bar that crosses the car through two pivots on opposite sides of the chassis. Outside the pivots, the bar is bent back and one end is attached to each wheel, usually through one or two flexible rubber bushes. When one wheel moves up, one end of the bar is raised and the other end lifts the other wheel, keeping the car stable.
