It is a hydraulic component that uses the combination of a pump and a turbine, both composed of a radial impeller, in which a low-viscous fluid flows. The Power Conservation

The Hydraulic Aspect

When the engine idles, the hydraulic pump provides too low torque to transmit movement to the second impeller; this allows the car to stand still or move only slightly when the accelerator pedal is not activated; sometimes just a small pressure on the brake control to avoid starting, etc. The action of the fluid, then, guarantees very gentle starts from a standstill.  The first torque converters, due to the intrinsic nature of the hydraulic operation, were characterized by slippages and obvious losses, especially at high speeds: part of the energy is dispersed during the transmission of motion between the two impellers, to the detriment of consumption and of benefits. To overcome this problem, on the most modern automatic transmissions there is a clutch which, when activated, rigidly connects the two impellers i.e. lock-up action, avoiding slippage at a constant speed.

Another problem concerns the phases of the engine off; in these situations, there is no locking effect given by the ‘gear engaged’ of traditional manual transmission, since the engine and gearbox are disconnected if the converter fluid does not move. It is for this reason that the parking function is present on modern cars, indicated with the letter P, which blocks the transmission in the event of a prolonged stop. Once the motor torque reaches the second impeller, it is transferred to the gearbox, consisting of planetary gears. This term means a transmission member formed by a central input gear, called pinion or sole, two or more intermediate satellites connected together by a satellite carrier (the planetarium) and an outer ring with an internal toothing, called crown. The peculiarity of this system is the possibility of choosing to alternately block the sun, the crown or the planetarium, so as to obtain different reduction ratios such as two positive and one negative, that is with inverted rotation suitable for the rear.
