The Conventional
In the past, however, things have gone differently for a long time and there have been few technicians who have taken different paths to reach goals similar to those that others have achieved with more conventional solutions. There are plenty of examples in the distribution sector. Here it may be sufficient to recall the unusual arrangement of the valves in some models built during the Fifties and Sixties. In these engines the combustion chambers were hemispherical and for each cylinder, there were two inclined valves which, however, did not lie on a transverse plane, that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the crankshaft, as required by the usual scheme. Instead, they were placed on a longitudinal plane. That is, they lay on a plane that contained the axis of the tree. This solution made it possible to produce compact heads and a simple and linear distribution control system with rods and rocker arms.
The System
However, it did not lend itself to being used in engines with in-line cylinders and certainly was not optimal about fluid dynamics, or engine breathing. Besides, the scheme used by Honda for its single-cylinder engines instead included an overhead camshaft and four ducts arranged in a usual manner (i.e. horizontal, with the two exhaust from the front side of the head and the two intake ports located at the rear). The intake valves were adjacent, on the same side and the same was true for the exhaust valves, on the opposite side. For each valve, there was an eccentric, which operated a two-arm balance of a conventional type, which in turn moved a finger balance acting on the end of the stem.
